Abstract

On an island in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, an electric siren and announcements by loudspeakers resound through a village. The sounds are not considered as noise by the people. In this study I analyze the reason why people do not recognize such big sounds as noise.
At first, they started to use the siren as an awaking alarm for the fishermen who took the cooperative fishery work. At that time each household had a member who took part in the work. Nowadays, most people in the village use the siren for several purposes according to their ways of life. They use the electric announcements system which delivers important information of the community.
It means that these sounds are recognized as necessary and important sounds but not as noise with a few exceptions. As a conclusion, it could be said that the sounds recognized as necessary and important for a community are never recognized as noise.
